The Palace Hotel
Palace Hotel, Camberwell – A Living Landmark Reimagined
Originally designed by renowned architect William George Wolf and opened in 1888, the Palace Hotel has stood for more than 130 years as a prominent three-storey landmark in Camberwell. A significant example of Melbourne’s late nineteenth-century boom-era hotel architecture, the building has long served as a cherished gathering place for the local community. Its redevelopment set out to revitalise this much-loved venue while reinforcing its role as a vibrant social anchor within the neighbourhood.
The project reimagines the internal layout to create a more open, transparent and adaptable series of public spaces. Updated hospitality facilities and improved accessibility support a venue that now operates seamlessly throughout the day and into the evening. Flexible zones allow the hotel to shift effortlessly between casual dining, social gatherings and programmed events, supported by custom joinery, modular service points and adaptable furniture arrangements.
Central to the design approach was the belief that heritage should be treated as a living asset. Rather than acting as a static backdrop, original elements were preserved, restored and celebrated. During construction, previously concealed architectural features—including an original access stair and spire—were uncovered and thoughtfully integrated into the design. Select areas of render were removed to reveal original brickwork, while decorative plaster and timber detailing were carefully restored. New interventions are deliberately contemporary yet sympathetic, with transitions between old and new expressed with clarity and confidence.
Material selections prioritise durability, authenticity and longevity. Warm timber, tactile stone and bold accents complement exposed brick, steel and timber structure, creating a cohesive and welcoming environment. Sustainability was embedded from the outset, with adaptive reuse of the existing structure significantly reducing embodied carbon, alongside energy-efficient lighting, water-saving fixtures and efficient kitchen equipment.
The result is a renewed Palace Hotel—both familiar and refreshed—where history and contemporary hospitality come together to serve the next generation of community life.
